One Region, Several Very Different Roofing Problems
Taranaki looks like one place on a map and behaves like three or four when it comes to roofing. A roof at Ōpunake is fighting salt and the full westerly together. A roof in Bell Block is a year old and belongs to a builder's programme. A roof in Eltham is sixty years old on a villa that has never been touched. A shed roof at Stratford is dealing with more rain than almost anywhere else in the North Island.
What that means practically is that the specification changes with the address. We ask where you are before we quote, because how far you are from breaking surf and which side of the mountain you sit on change the substrate, the coating, the fixings and the flashing details - and getting that wrong is how a thirty-year roof becomes a fifteen-year roof.

We are based in New Plymouth and work the whole of Taranaki - Bell Block, Waitara and the north, the coast, and south through Stratford and Hāwera and beyond.
Roofing in New Plymouth
Our home town, and the base we work from. The biggest share of our work, from the older villas and bungalows of Westown, Vogeltown and Fitzroy through to the new subdivisions. Anything near the coast gets fixings and a coating grade chosen for salt air, not just for looks.
Roofing in Stratford
Central Taranaki sits on the wet side of the maunga and gets a great deal more rain than the coast, so flashings, laps and the fall on every gutter get more attention here than anywhere else we work. Forty minutes down the highway from us.
Roofing in Inglewood
Twenty minutes down the road from us on the northern flank of the mountain. Wet, exposed to the westerly, and with a lot of older weatherboard homes whose original corrugate has done sixty years and is now letting go around the nail heads.
Roofing in Eltham
Dairy country with a lot of solid old villas and a good number of sheds and workshops. Plenty of long, low roofs that are simple to re-roof well and easy to re-roof badly.
Roofing in Hāwera
South Taranaki's main town. A mix of older housing stock, newer builds on the edges, and light commercial buildings along the highway that need to keep trading while the roof is replaced.
Roofing in Waitara
Coastal and low-lying at the river mouth. Salt, wind and a lot of roofs from the 1960s and 70s coming to the end of their working life all at once.

New Plymouth's growth area, so most of our work out here is new builds - roofing to a builder's programme with the frame open and the next trade already waiting on us.
Roofing in Ōakura
Surf coast. The closer a house sits to the beach the harder the salt works on it, and a specification that would last forty years in Stratford will not last twenty here without the right substrate and fixings.
Roofing in Ōpunake
The most exposed corner of our patch - the full westerly straight off the Tasman, and salt with it. Barge, ridge and apron detailing matter more here than the choice of roof sheet.
Roofing in Manaia and Pātea
The south coast, a longer drive from New Plymouth but one we make regularly. Farm buildings, older homes and small-town commercial premises, all of it in wind and salt.
Coastal, or Inland?
New Zealand roofing specification uses environmental categories based on how corrosive the atmosphere is, and distance from breaking surf is the main driver. It is genuinely the most important question on the whole quote, and it is the one most likely to be skipped.
In broad terms across Taranaki:
- Severe marine. Right on the coast - the beachfront at Ōakura, Ōpunake, Waitara and the New Plymouth foreshore. Needs the most corrosion-resistant substrate available, and the fixings are not somewhere to save money.
- Coastal. Most of New Plymouth, Bell Block, Waitara and the coastal strip. Coastal-grade product and fixings throughout, including on the spouting and the flashings.
- Inland. Stratford, Inglewood, Eltham and Hāwera. Standard specification generally performs well, though the rainfall on the eastern side of the maunga means laps, flashings and gutter sizing get more attention, not less.
We will tell you which category we think your address sits in and why, and if it is borderline we will specify up rather than down. The cost difference between a coastal specification and a standard one is small. The cost difference between a roof that lasts thirty years and one that lasts fifteen is not.
How Far Do You Go?
New Plymouth, Bell Block, Waitara and Ōakura are our home patch. Inglewood, Stratford and Eltham are half an hour down the road and we are there constantly. Hāwera, Manaia, Ōpunake and the south coast we cover regularly.
If you are further out - Pātea and the south coast, or up towards Mōkau - ring us anyway. For the right job we travel, and it costs nothing to ask.
